Postal Employee Active Duty and Retirement Benefits
Postal Employees have a slightly different retirement system. While most benefits are generally the same a few differences exists that will affect how you plan for retirement.
Life Insurance: While you are working the BASIC FEGLI Life insurance is provided to you at no charge. However, once you retire you will end paying the price of this premium. This means that if you keep your FEGLI life insurance in retirement you will likely see your rates increase to keep the same coverage.
Health Insurance: As a Postal Employee, you will receive a higher subsidy with your Health Insurance while you work, but will experience the same rates as other pensioners once retired. This means that your cost for health insurance will likely increase once you separate from service.
FERS Pension: Your FERS Pension is calculated like anyone else listed as “Regular Employees”.
